Like others, after only one day I started to feel side effects. Luckily after now 3 weeks on this pill, I they have practically all gone away. The first one I noticed was tingling in my feet and knees. I felts light headed. I did not vomit but I constantly felt like I was about to. My mouth was dry. I had to, and still do, go to the bathroom like 20 times a day to pee huge amounts. But like I said, it all went away, except for the tingling and going to pee often. This drug definitely requires some getting used to but it wasn't, for me, AS BAD as I have read on here. Be patient and don't panic. Jist prepare yourselves for some mild side effects that are likely to pass in a couple of weeks. I certainly prefer having some tingling in my feet or a dried mouth rather than losing my vision. The benefits of this treatment outweighs the side effects.Read More Read Less

I have beeen on this for almost 3 years. I stared at 250mg twice a day and now take up to 5000mg a day depending on altitude & weather. The potential severe side effects now outweigh the effectiveness of the drug leaving me no option but a programable shunt. My problem was caused by a failed trial 9 years ago & I am terrified now to have them drill into my head. The thought of leaving behind my 3 children is torturous, however remaining on the medicine has deadly side effects too. Over the past 3 years I have also suffered from all the side effects everyone has discussed, extreme exhaustion, low libido, confusion. I wish PTC on no one. Read More Read Less

After being diagnosed with PTC in October I began to research and find out how other people were faring on the journey. I had never heard of anything like this before and I was just happy that it wasn't an actual brain tumor. The only major symptom I had was papillodema, rarely did I even get headaches so I was surprised to find out that something was seriously wrong in my head. I was told to try and lose some weight and start taking 1000mg/day of Acetazolamide. I was nervous to start taking the drug because of all the horror stories I had been reading. The first three weeks on the drug were rough. Tingling in my hands, feet, and mouth were insane and took some getting used to. My energy level dropped even lower to what it had been before. I couldn't even walk up the stairs without having to sit down and catch my breath. I refused to touch carbonated beverages because I didn't want to experience what everyone had been saying about the side effects. I had diarrhea almost every day, and just wanted to sleep most of the time. Then all of a sudden my body must have gotten used to the medication because I started to feel better than I had even before being on the medication, the side effects have mostly disappeared (almost four months now) and I just have the occasional tingling in my hands and toes, especially if it's cold. I have lost 25 pounds since the beginning of October and I see my Neuro-Opthamologist every month. At my last visit he says that he sees improvement in my eyes and that things are heading in the right direction. So though things might be rough now, I say hang in there because it does get better. This medication definitely works for me. After 4-5 days the headache was almost completely gone and I have now hit day 7 with only a very slight headache that's not easily noticeable. The downsides are what other people have previously described: I am always tired, always taking naps, and have no energy to do enjoyable things. I bruise easily, I am so weak, non-existent libido, nausea and abdominal pain (taking Zofran to help), and tingling sensations in the hands and feet. This medication is no joke, but it did help. It does beat surgery and it does beat a severe headache.Read More Read Less

This drug completely eliminated the muscle weakness I had been waking with in my arms, and made breathing effortless. The downside is cognitive impairment if I take it during the day. I also get insomnia from it, but I'm starting to sleep a little better (some nights). I intend to stay on the drug for as long as my neurologist will prescribe it.

I've been on diamox for 4 months now. I was taking 500mg twice a day, now I'm on 250mg twice a day. I lost 15lbs in a month. No idea what my weight is now. My vision is good now, no more black outs. I have been taking Lexapro because I was so irritated, and having panic attacks possibly because I've been going through a lot withmy PTC. I was having my hands, feet and lips tingling and now my hands only tingle once in a while. I get so lightheaded that sometimes I almost fall over. (it's the diamox) sometimes my stomach hurts, it feels like I'm a drug addict because I take two medications and I believe it's tearing my stomach up. Lately I've been having diarrhea. I have no idea if it's a side effect or not. I do urinte quite often, I even wake up in the middle of the night 2-3 times. I do feel like I get so tired I need to go to bed sometimes and that I don't want to do anything. I'm a stay at home mom so it's a little easier for me. I've learned DO NOT forget to take your diamox, you get your headaches back and you feel very like "needing it" like your a drug addict. Oh I've been very forgetful also. Neurologist says it's the diamox. I just want to be healthy and not have to do this anymore. I hope this helps.Read More Read Less

I have what seems EVERY side effect it warns about. Yes I am miserable but the alternative is a shunt in my head. Did a LP(lumbar puncture) but its a band aid fix. Just temporary relief & was back full force. If you look into shunts it is so much more terrifying then what these side effects from this medicine offer. I am on 1000 mg a day. I had mild headaches every morning but lost my some of my peripheral vision. It was medicine or surgery. So now I struggle to breathe, tingling face with hands sometimes, mild headaches still, buzzing in my ears, tired/exhausted, depression, Soda pop is now awful tasting, my potassium is low from medicine depleting it so need to supplement, lost my appetite & will get sick if I take these on an empty stomach. But there are so many complications from shunts afterwards. I just couldn't. I had to try meds 1st. Your in between a rock & a hard place chose what is best for you &/or your family.Read More Read Less

I am on 1000 mg a day. Only been on this since June 24. I feel terrible. I don't have any energy. I sleep constantly. I have never really had a problem with heartburn but now I have been getting it daily. My face does tingle.what you read about soda tasting terrible is true but that is good helps me up stay away from them. I can handle everything except the no energy. I feel like a failure when I don't have the strength to clean my house or even dry my hair. It makes going to work a huge challenge and I have to constantly pray for stenght and pray I eony pass out. Please tell me this will get better. I have been feeling like I will pass out but I suppose that is a symptom not the medication. Read More Read Less

this is my second time in my life I've been on it. I get really sick everyday and it's hard to keep up with some daily tasks. It's hard on my body and I used to be told I was allergic to it but my doctors wanted to try it again.

I have been on this medication for over 10 years. There are many side affects which are in no way worse than the condition. I will gladly deal with the tingling of hands, feet, knees, etc. Even the change in the way foods taste is worth it. I am much better off taking the medication.

I have been taking this medication (1000mg) for a extreme dizziness in addition to other symptoms from RAMSAY-HUNT syndrome (Shingles in cranial nerves 5,7,8)following a LP. Initially the medication was an absolute epiphany.. my vision became stable and dizziness was minimal. I didn't experience any negative side effects except tingling of hands, feet and lips which mostly subsided after a few months(constant fatigue is an ongoing problem though). Unfortunately, this medication STOPPED working after about 18 months.. I've been unable to hook-up with a Neurologist to prescribe an alternate medication.. I'm in the process of stopping Diamox (500 mg 2x daily) and the side effects are an absolute nightmare... pain, pain and more pain. Does anyone know the NAME of an alternate medication that works as well??Read More Read Less

I don't remember what dosage I started with but it's been increased through the years to keep the pressure down. I'm on 2000mg now and stable. At first I had a lot of side effects, tingling of the fingers and feet and lips and I was so sick to my stomach I lost 32 pounds in 2 months but I blame some of the nausea on another medication they we making me take because when I got off that one it went away. Even at the dose I'm on I still get the whooshing in my right ear and very dizzy if I bend over and stand back up. I take 4 potassium supplements because it depletes it from my body and I kept passing out and ending up in the emergency room until a new set of doctors put me on the potassium. I hated taking the medication and all the other ones I am on for other conditions that I have since getting "sick" but I am sure I would be blind if I weren't on them. My body has gotten use to the medication and I don't feel any of the tingling any more. Weight loss hasn't help me but I've heard it does help others so I keep my weight down. I would say to stay on this medication because the migraines/headaches and vision loss/problems that occur are worth working through the side effectsRead More Read Less

It has cause nausea, constapation, BAD ACNE on my face, mood swings, and extream tiredness, and tingeling in my hands, feet, face, and knees. I still have the dizzy spells and the blacking out of my eyes (like when you look at the flash of a camera). Nothing i eat or drink taste good. I have to make myself eat and drink. I go to the bathroom less now than i did b4 I started the meds.

After about 3 months of 500mg twice a day I developed pain in my shoulders diagnosed by an orthopaedist as calcium buildup. He ordered physical rehab three 30 min sessions weekly.Very painful. Aglaucoma specialist said acetazolamide caused the condition and changed my med to Azopt 1% and pain disappeared shortly thereafter
