I have been taking this medication for about ten years. In the beginning, it took about a year of trying varying doses to get to the dose that stablized my thyroid. I chose to stay on the med rather than radiation or surgery, so I wouldn't have to take tyroid replacement and experience hypothyroid symptoms. I no longer experience symptoms of hyperthyroid while taking only 5mg once a day and have m...

I, against my better judgement, and at the md's urging, took one freaking pill--5 mgs. this AM (a year ago I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid--put on meds--lost 31 pounds (to 86) got bad bronchitis and then told I had hyperthyroid! So, one pill--4 hours later -- in the supermarket-- had a few small seizures and hallucinations--called the doc (it's her day off) and said no more--I'm done. T...

This is a nasty drug. Leaves metallic taste in your mouth and messed with my cognitive function. Diarrhea and stomach cramps too. It did clear the diverticulitis though. I hope I never have to take it again. It works though!

I have only been on low dose for 10 days. i appreciated reading all the reviews as i have noticed some vision problems and bloated stomach. not sure if its the medication. my doctor also is one that says not due to medication on anything I ask him so it was good to read reviews from others on same medication. also read should only be on it no more than 2 years, but some of reviews show been on it for a lot longer.

I have inflammatory RA and had a sudden onset of hyperthyroidism in 2005 after menopause. My rheumatologist warned me that autoimmune diseases sometimes affect other organs later in life. I used this medication for 3 mo and thyroid was normalized. 2 yrs later my tsh went through the roof and I was started on levothyroxine. Now after 11 yrs of that my thyroid is hyper again and I have to go back on the methimazole to regulate it. Hopefully all the weight I have lost in the past 8 yrs with paleo lifestyle will not come back. Will it ever end?Read More Read Less

I developed acute leukemia (AML) after being on this drug for 18 months; it was prescribed to treat Graves disease. A rare side effect is listed as "blood disorders" and leukemia certainly falls within that category. I am convinced that methimazole caused my blood cancer. Of course, I can't "prove" that this was the actual cause, but I believe this to be the case for me. I would advise you not to take this medication under any circumstances.

I was diagnosed with tachycardia, and because of this, my doctor investigated and found I have a hyperactive thyroid. I was prescribed 5mg of this Rx, 3 times a day. It was working pretty well the first week, lowering my levels, but halfway into the second week of taking it, I noticed some weird side effects. It started with a headache and upset stomach consistently each day at the same time. I let it go at first, but when my symptoms werent getting better within a couple days, I decided to tell my doctor. By the time I made an appointment, I had gotten so sick with the worst stomach and side pain I've ever had...I couldnt eat, lay down, sit up, laugh, sneeze, or even burp without it making me want to cry. I also noticed the whites of my eyes were turning yellow! I went right to the emergency room where they found out I had gotten the rare case of serious side effects. It was making my liver fail but luckily I fixed it when I did. I'm okay now, but definitely staying away from this drug forever!Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. Started on methimezole 20mg and am now up to 40 with no significant change in thyroid chemistry. I would like to know if anyone else is on this high a dose.

I just recently checked some of the medical information sites, and none of them mentioned the WORST side effect - weight gain! I have been gaining about 1/2 pound per day for the last few weeks, and I've tried to eat healthy and not overdo any treats, etc. It feels so unfair. It makes me want to get the radiation treatment in hopes that a thyroid supplement will have less side effects...

I have been taking this drug for almost 2yrs maybe a little longer it has been working for me bringing my levels down but I have had constant back pain to the point where it is hard to get out off bed right now I am only on 5mg once a day I drop from 10 twice a day I thought the decrease would help my back but it didn't its. it is also hard me to lose weight so I have to watch what I eat or I will just keep getting bigger and bigger.

went from 10 to 30 to 60mg/day with Metoprolol 50mg/day for A-fib and high heart rate. Needless to say, the metoprolol is working its magic better than my Thyroid meds which have barely budged my T3/T4 numbers at all. All my thyroid med's have done for me so far is make me look, walk and feel like I'm pregnant. I'm all swelled up from head to toe. I've been on this stuff since mid-May and all it's getting me is tired and fat. Can't even sit without leaning back to allow room for my chest/belly. Just disguted with this whole Thyroid mess. Can't even go for WALKS with my child - I go about 20 steps and then my back hurts, like I said - like I was pregnant.Read More Read Less

I have been on methimazole for 12 years. I just found a great Dr. he said Never do radiation! surgery is the safest route. I have hair loss, weakness in my muscles, nausea, dry heaves in the morning. I am wondering what has happened to my organs at this . since the meds were keeping my numbers good he figured why change anything! !!
