I am 49 years old and have not had a period for about three years. My doctor did some blood work and said I have started menopause. I was feeling horrible. I had hot flashes, anxiety, heart pounding, couldn't sleep, and was miserable. He put me on prometrium, 200 mg. daily to be taken before bed. This medication has changed my life. I feel normal again.

I started having significant memory loss and bad mood swings. Called Dr. 3 times-no help. Found problem myself.

I am peri-menopausal and had very heavy bleeding for a month. I was so anemic (red cell count 64) I needed an emergency blood transfusion. Thought the bleeding was due to menopause but an ultrasound revealed a fibroid. I rested for 2 weeks, am taking iron & 200 mg of prometrium at night. My bleeding stopped immediately, I have been advised to take it for 3 months until a followup appt. where it may be decided that I get a hysterectomy. I am concerned because I now have slight retinal ischemia in both eyes, caused by my anemia, and am worried that the prometrium may make it worse. Basically worried about blood clots though not sure if I need to be?Read More Read Less

This stuff is poison! Went on it per my dr for Pms symptoms/ low progesterone. Within 4 days I was having severe panic/anxiety attacks, depression, and lethargy. Please think twice about using this as I am on day 8 off of it and still having panic, depression, and lethargy

I am post menopausal and taking one 50mg prometrium capsule in the evening before bedtime. The idea is to protect my uterine lining while I use an estrogen patch to protect my bones from osteoporosis. I have taken nearly every form of progesterone over the last 10 years and cannot tolerate any of it. My muscles and joints ache; I become progressively more irritable: I experience nausea and intestinal bloating, plus I bleed and have night sweats. Overall, I consider this medicine to be highly toxic to my body and without much benefit, if any.Read More Read Less

Do I need to take it everyday? I'm 72 years old, wear a .=0.025 patch of estrogen and in the last few years have noticed a bloat in my abdomen. Is this due to prometirum?

Started on 100 mg with no problems, then doctor raised to 200 mg and now after 16 months of no period I have severe cramps, low back pain, inflammation of abdomen, severe PMS symptoms and overall flu like symptoms. I went off it completely, who needs these feelings after 16 months. Really starting to think don't mess with mother nature and leave our bodies alone without all these hormones.

I have used this medication before with no problems. Prescribed for use with Estrogen in perimenopause, this time it has created severe bladder/urethral inflamation and pain. I have had to stop my HRT due to this reaction.

I have not started it yet but I am wearing the Estradiol patch, 0.05 MG. They gave me pregnenolone, 50 mg and it does not agree with me, so I stopped taking it. It would make me brak out with sweats and dizzy. I have been tested and I have no Testerone whatsoever or Predosone in my body, I do have a high Estrogen level. I have been in my full blown Menopause for 4 years now, thenight sweats come and go, the hot flashes come and go on a regular basses, btu I have a high sexual desire, my stomach will swell and burn in the times of desire, I hurt and get sore in the vagina. I do not have any sexual activity and have not for a few years now. So what can I do and should I take this Prometruim. I had a heart attack back in 1992 and none since. I have high blood pressure which I am on meds for that, high chlostrol, high triclycerides, LDL'S AND HDL'S..I do not take anything for those, I just try to watch what I eat and exercise. I have put on 45 pounds in the last 4 years and not able to get them off. That too is a major concern. What advice could you give me on handling this Menopause? Read More Read Less

For the most part this medication has worked for me. I've been taking prometrium for 6 months for heavy bleeding and to help regulate my periods. I have noticed weight gain and hot flashes while taking this medication.

I took this drug for nearly 2 years for endometrial hyperplasia, peri-menopause and as a cancer preventive. Estrogen based cancer is in my immediate family (mom and only full sister) and this balances out my naturally high estrogen levels. It has worked great for me. The side effects were slight to moderate and I could get past them easily. The main problem I have is this drug is EXPENSIVE, most insurances do NOT cover it and the manufacturer no longer has any patient assistance for it. Now I have to find something that does the same thing AND is available to someone on a fixed income. Read More Read Less

I was prescribed Vivelle dot and Prometrium 100 mg at night. I wanted to see if HRT would help with anxiety and depression. At the same time, I have begun some other medications for anxiety and now I don't know what is causing which side effects. I am exhausted and I rarely sleep more than a few hours before waking up. I thought the problem was a mecication called Kapvay however after reading here, it could be the prometrium. I am going off this drug tonight. Although the risk was fairly low, I fear the risk of dementia. I read a 2003 study which showed that when taken with estrogen for HRT participants taking EPT had approximately twice as many cases of probable dementia as the placebo group. The other risk is breast cancer and blood clots. I hate hot flashes and anxiety but the risks are scaring me too much. I am so exhausted that I can barely work and i am worried I will need to quit my retail job. Read More Read Less

I think this Rx is making me feel awful! I have had a total hysterectomy, no uterus, 9 mos. ago & started bio-identical hormones, including 200mgs of Prometrium, 3 mos ago which knocked me out! I've since reduced dosage to 100mgs & am still feeling so fatigued, have headaches, joint pain & am depressed. I am, again reducing dosage tonight in hopes of improvement. I also am putting on weight but was told today by the nurse this med is supposed to help w/ water retention.
