I take Amitiza twice a day. It helps me have 4 to 5 bowel movements a week. I was only going once a week before and the straining was terrible. I have a predictable movement instead of the explosive bowel movements I get with linzess or laxatives.

I have been on this medication for one week. It has relieved my chronic constipation but replaced it with loose stools bordering on diarrhea. My doctor prescribed taking the drug 2x daily. However, this produced very, loose stools, painful gas and stomach discomfort. I reduced the dosage to 1x daily and noticed some improvement. Since reducing the dosage, I have less gas, my stools are more fi...

So this medication is a life saver. I don't take it as directed sometimes but it definetly works when I do take 2 a day. i do experience headaches and abdominal cramps but I had also been constipated for as long as I can remember. Taking this and a fiber supliment have helped me a lot. The side effects are easy to deal with. At first I had really bad abdominal pains because I was trying to pass such a large bowl movement, but that was the only time. I have been on the drug for about 6 months. It has helped me a lot.Read More Read Less

I have used Amitiza 24MCG Caps for over two months, with very little help, but then before NOTHING would help! I switched over about 11/2 months ago to Linzess 290MCG Caps, with absolutely no results over two weeks, so I switched back to Amitiza! Sorry I was not very helpful.......I sure wish I was!!

I was diagnosed with an Xtra long colon, and have used Amitiza for several years. No bad side effects on lowest dose 2X a day. Occasional diarhea but otherwise so much better than before

I have to eat with this medication so I don't have stomach pain and diarrhea. I am very pleased with it overall. I am able have bowel movements daily now! I also feel I have lost weight since taking this medication; probably because I am actually emptying my bowel better.

This does not work. Gave me a horrible headache and I didn't have a movement for three days, it was horrible. After reading all the other reviews, I'm surprised this medication is on the market. Back to my poop tea, lol.

It did cause an upset stomach/headache when taken without food, so would only take after lunch and then after dinner.Still no relief for a week or so. I now eat a small bowl of oatmeal or a smoothie in AM and then take pill. Keep my H2O intake up, then after a light dinner take another pill. When it does take effect, I have to be near a toilet, as at times it comes rushing out!! You can hear your colon moving it thru.

I wrote the last post, and just have to say that taking Amitiza for a few weeks, did nothing for me. I just had a colonoscopy and have a follow up appointment next week. The Dr. gave me some Lizness samples, so I started that today. The Amitiza worked it seemed like for the first 2 days, but after that....nothing!!

I have Gastroparesis and also the tube that empties my stomach into my intestine is damaged. To the point it was almost completely collapsed. I had three procedures of my gastro doctor ballooning the tube to help me get rid of food in my stomach. I could only go to the bathroom at most, once a month. This medicine was one of the best things to happen to my life at this point. There are times I still am unable to go to the bathroom using this medicine but typically, it works like a charm. Because of the gastroparesis I eat very small amounts of food. And I do get sort of nauseated after eating until the medicine kicks in, but I think its the medicine working and breaking the food down. Typically once my stomach is emptied the nausea or cramps disappear. It is well worth any of the small discomforts to be able to not have food sitting on my stomach for days, months or weeks. This medicine gave me my life back in so many ways. Food rotting and fermenting in your stomach is a sort of sick I can't even describe. Read More Read Less

31 years, type 1 diabetic for 24 years; also have sleep apnea and anxiety. I was diagnosed with perfectly healthy bowels after a colonoscopy and told I likely had IBS regarding the pain, bloating, sensation of razorblades, all-over body aches, and occasional feverish symptoms. I DO NOT have constipation more than 3 days--I deal with that if it gets that far using a laxative. I have a lot of stress in my life and none of my Drs listen when I say that. I went though hell and back just getting a diagnosis. They gave me Amitiza with another drug. I tried the amitiza for ONE day. I took the 8 MCG as instructions stated--with meals and lots of water, twice a day. First dose produced the burning, asthma-like sensation in my chest. It began 30 minutes after taking the pill and lasted for a few hours. After that I had reflux, and my stomach felt sloshy and full of water. It didn't help me have a bowel movement. the second dose, at dinner, produced something akin to a low-level, constant anxiety attack--heart pounding occasionally, reflux, upset stomach, etc. I had trouble sleeping. This morning, I couldn't eat for several hours due to stomach upset, and I cried uncontrollably in the bathroom for a while. It prevented me from going to work. When the symptoms faded, i called the Gastro office and they confirmed that I had a reaction and shouldn't take it. I am currently looking into psychology and diet based methods for dealing with IBS. I think Amitiza probably works for some people, just not for me. Always check all options.Read More Read Less

I am a 39 year old female and I have been constipated most of my life. It got worse after the birth of my son 19 years ago. I have been dependent of laxatives for about the last 5 years. It is draining on me trying to live my life around having to take laxatives. I went back to the Dr. yesterday, she put me on Amatiza 24MCG twice a day. I took 2 pills yesterday and just took my second pill today. I have had 2 BM"s today!!! Wow! That hasn't happened to me in a long time! I felt a little dizziness after the first pill, and I had a headache last night, but i'm prone to headaches anyways, so I can't say that the Amitiza gave me the headache or not. However, I can deal with the headache as long as i'm regular. I'm hoping this medication works for me for a long time, it's expensive, but so far after only 2 days, it's worth it. Good luck to everyone! I know how constipation can put a damper on your life. Read More Read Less

Began using this medication after surgery for a rectocele. I had fecal incontinence & chronic constipation prior to the surgery. Combined with the FODMAP diet (created at Stanford)my bowel movements have definitely improved. I am very active, run daily and now I have my life back!

I had only taken two doses of Amitiza when I began to experience an overall feeling of sadness (depression). I started to cry and couldn't stop! Finally I called my pharmacist and she told me to stop the medication and call my MD on Monday. Interesting to note that the 2 doses did not result in a bowel movement.

Unpredictable response, sometimes worked in an hour, sometimes 24 hrs. later. Had very loose smelly stools every time. Tried it several times and could not tolerate it. It made me nauseous and gave me headache and flu-like symptoms. I have found using two doses of Miralax a day AND one dose of Linzess 290 mcg. once a day 1/2 hour before eating (it is a prescription med) work much better with no side effects.

Within one hour of starting medication I had a headache. An hour later, I had reactive airways which did NOT improve in 1-3 hours. My breathing worsened over a 24 hour period, which resulted in needing an Epi pen & high dose of steroids. Not sure exactly what ingredient (active or otherwise) caused this but stopped taking it immediately. I may have difficulty with this classification of medication, but having no prior usage was unaware of it.

In Jan 2010 I had cancer of the leg and after surgery went through 6 weeks of radiation which caused me a lot of trouble with my whole leg, constant swelling and pain so I have been on time released and reg. morphine. Then it was discovered I had Neuropathy in that leg causing me to go on Lyrica all 3 very constipating drugs. I tried stool softeners, laxatives & prune juice trying to take care of the problem myself. Finally I went to my MD and she put me on Listor shots which did not work for me. So I went to a gastroenterologist who put me on 2 24mcg Amitiza a day plus 1 dose of MiraLax (I use ClearLax from Sam's) The treatment has been very successful for me. I don't dare miss a does of either one. I have not had any side effects and have been able to have easy BM every day. What a relief to have finally found something that works for me. Amitiza is very expensive even with my insurance, but hopefully one day they will have a generic which will help many.Read More Read Less
