How common is lung cancer?

Lung cancer is responsible for the most cancer-related deaths for both men and women throughout the world. The American Cancer Society estimated that about 234,030 new cases of lung cancer would be diagnosed and about 154,050 deaths due to lung cancer would occur in 2018. Not counting skin cancer, it is the second most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the US.

The most common type of cancer in the U.S. in 2018 was breast cancer, with 268,670 new cases expected. The next most common cancers were lung cancer and prostate cancer. 

Lung cancer has surpassed breast cancer as the cause of most cancer-related deaths in men and women in the U.S.
