Kate Jackson, Certified Dog Trainer
There are times when it's absolutely important that your dog come back to you immediately. We refer to this command as come NOW and we use this when your dog is in danger. So what you would do need for this exercise is at least a 25 foot long line, This teaches your dog that coming when called is not optional. What you would do is give the come now command, and if your dog didn't turn around immediately, you've got the leash to tug. Good boy. And sit. Very good. So the most important part about this exercise is to use a treat that is absolutely irresistible to your dog. I would even go and raid the fridge for a leftover piece of chicken or steak whenever you practice this exercise. So if you practice this exercise every day, once a day, with your 25 foot leash, you'll be able to do this with your dog. Stoney, now! Yes, good boy, very good.
