I began using Lysine 5 years ago due to a bad outbreak of cold sores. I had suffered cold sores all my life several times a year but this was one of my worst outbreaks and I had tried everything else to heal them, my pharmacist recommended L-Lysine ointment and told me others had said that taking the supplement reduced the outbreaks so I decided to try that too. The next day the ointment had cut...

I started taking L-lysine a month ago and have not had an outbreak or side effects. I also use, daily, alcohol to clean the area and apply amino acid cream that clears the scap. Thank GOD I found out about Lysine!!!

I am 79 and I have had the problem from as far back as I can remember. At first all we had was Campho phnique (misspelled and useless) Then there was an article in Readers Digest about L-Lysine. For several months or maybe a year no drug store had any, way too much demand. Then there was no instructions on how much to take. Since this wasn't studies by drug companies but trial and error by each person. Here is what I have found that works extremely well every time. First I have found that I have no problems with taking large doses, it just works quicker. ALWAYS have a bottle handy, speed is important. I keep a bottle at home, at my office, AND in my car. The MOMENT I feel one start, I take a dose. A DOSE is 6 of the 500 mg size pills. Put 1 on each side back on back teeth, crunch them up, almost no taste, makes them faster acting, drink lots of water. remember, 6 crunched up pills per dose. Within 15 minutes you no longer feel the blister. AGAIN the moment you feel the blister again, take another dose. It may be in an hour or two, BUT the moment you feel it, take another full dose. Go by the feel of the blister only. If you can feel it after 15 or 20 minutes, take another dose. When done this way, I can totally whip an attack, and no one else can even see where the blister was starting. There is nothing to heal, its over and all gone. If they are coming again and again, after I whip it I take 1 or 2 tablets morning and night. I think I could take 1 pill per day and would never have an attack, But I only take them when I feel them coming. After reading this and thinking of people I have told about it, somehow many don't take enough or often enough. They still say that it helped. Another thing, Some called them cold sores and canker sores. I don't know if it is the same problem but it seems that the same solution might work. I sure wish I could get some feedback but that is not the way it is set up. Good luck.Read More Read Less

Years ago, I used lysine ointment on some blisters on my torso that I was concerned about leading to shingles. (I had heard or read, that lysine was effective against herpes.) The issue did not worsen and I attributed that to the lysine. Of course I cannot verify results being due to the treatment.

I tried it to deal with a Herpes outbreak, I took 2000mg in the morning, the 1000mg that night. WOW..it stopped the outbreak COMPLETELY right away! Wish I knew about this years ago. It seems you need to keep taking it to prevent outbreaks. So, I take 1000mg every day for now. If I forget to take it for a few days, I may begin to feel a tingle.. but if I take 1000mg right away it goes away immediately. Seriously.. No kidding... its a wonder "drug" for me. ALSO as a side benefit, my skin has never been so soft and smooth, perhaps it will help with my hair loss!! LOL, hope so!Read More Read Less

No doctor ever suggested this. Instead they would prescribe very expensive medicine which had very limited effects. Lysine, which costs pennies a tablet, works just as well as the expensive pharmaceuticals.

I have cold sore outbreaks about every 2 months. I have found that rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide applied every hour helps immensely. After those, I put on coconut oil, and then antibiotic ointment, and they're usually gone in a little over a week. I take L-Lysine tablets to aid in the healing but the rubbing alcohol seems most effective of all these.

L-Lysine, taken orally and raw honey applied topically, shorted the length of my cold sore better than any OTC cold sore rememdy.

I have HSV-2. On a referral from a friend with HSV-1, I started taking 1000mg each time I felt the beginning of an outbreak until the sensation subsided. I have been doing this now for 20 years and have not had any major outbreaks. I have not noticed any side effects.
