I have been diagnosed with arthritis of the wrist and hand that has caused me much pain. I have arthitis in both knees. DMSO has not proved to be any better for pain relief than Ibuprofen gel (which has the advantage of not making your breath smell of garlic or sour milk)

I use generic DMSO liquid purchased at a tack shop for pain from a dislocated shoulder. Works very well. Low cost treatment. Great when used with physical therapy to relive the pain and regain the use and movement of the shoulder. I can live with the garlic taste and body Oder side effects.

i HAVE TAKEN IT ORALLY AND TOPICALLY...only side effect was that my skin peeled, probably due to it being old skin being shed? It has helped me with muscular and skeletal pains...I used it before and after shopping for my knees, without it I would be in pain, I take it mixed in water, also do iodine patches in conjunction with the dmso for better absorption... backbone pain is gone with 2 day application...hubby had 2 neck bones removed and replace with 2 rods 15 years ago and until last year always pain...now it is gone....takes care of muscle cramping from the cold as well. used it on sores, used it in my drinks and so far, after using about 28 ounces already, I see or feel no side effects other than the odd time, it itches for about 90 seconds...add cloth to it, itching stops. all in all i am very please and so are 4 of my neighbours to whom I introduced DMSO to....one had a leg stump and fingers missing and he is no longer in pain....i use life choice medicinal grade dmso. Oh yeah, and it works through large muscles like my butt....for the pain stemming from my butt bones was so painful i could not sit down....3 days of use 2ce a day and that took 70% of the pain away. i did get some skin peeling but that was no issue. I had heard of DMSO as an animal treatment for soreness and then there was a big controversy in the 80's since it was being used by people with joint pain and arthritis. It was not "USDA approved" etc. I got some 15 years ago because I had pain from congenital spinal degeneration and of course an increase in severe back pain. To me, it didn't really work for that (difficult to apply). But now I have severe arthritic joint pain too and it definitely works for that, for me. For the back, one thing that really worked and got me mobile was acupuncture. That was last year (2015) and it was really amazing after just wanting to lay down all the time, in pain. I'm quite physical etc. To stay that way is critical at my age. But the DMSO I would use externally and it goes thru the skin. Yes, it may irritate skin so use a lower % (I use 99%) from DMSO, Inc. but it's sold by many other companies and don't pay very much for it. If it's a good enough topical for a horse, I'm fine with it. I wouldn't ever take DMSO internally though unless prescribed. One other ointment that works ok is Tri-Flora by Boericke Read More Read Less

Applied topically to my arthritic ankle, and in combination with aspercream or something similar, it significantly reduces the pain. I've read the book, DMSO by Dr Walker, and am excited with the potential DMSO has for so many things. I buy the 99% pure vetinary DMSO and mix it 70 DMSO to 30 distilled water.

Have been using it for a torn tendon in my knee. relieves pain substantially. 99% DMSO liquid. I've been applying it 2x a day for about 3 days. Each day I see improvement. Less pain and more mobility. I will re-assess after 10 days of use. Surgery and drugs are never an option.

I've used DMSO with wounds on my skin caused by steroids, prescribed to help treat post-radiation illnesses due to brain cancer. It healed the wounds in days. Medications make me very sensitive to sunlight and I burn easily. DMSO healed my 1st-2nd degree burns within 4-5 days. It caused my skin to peel faster, too. Don't put it on thick, or it may cause your skin to get red, raise a bit and swell with all it's forced to absorb, and if it's thick enough to drip, you'll have that red raised skin follow the drips. It does go away and didn't cause any injury, but it was uncomfortable. Just coat it enough to get your skin to glisten. The person that applied it enough to drip didn't know how to use it. Also make sure your skin is clean and soap free of you'll find out what it's like to absorb soap. It does sting. Never use your fingers to apply it; use gloves, a cotton ball or a Q-Tip. Never "double dip" and contaminate the gel. It has no disinfectant properties, and it is possible to cross-contaminate that way. That's why if you use a roll-on stick, make sure only you use it and never share. An elderly woman took a bad fall and scraped up her arm pretty badly. After an immediate application of DMSO after cleaning, her wound was gone in a matter of days. The skin of the elderly is very sensitive and fragile which makes it slower to heal, so this is remarkable! Highly recommended among cancer patients, the elderly and healthy.Read More Read Less

I had bursitis of the hip for over 6 months. Dr said she could inject steroids, but might or might not work. Read on Dr Weil's website about DMSO-went to Tractor SUpply and got it (used for horses). Mixed 70/30(distilled water) put on 2 times a day for a week and can now sleep on that side-smells like garlic-but it works.

I have been diagnosed with arthritis of the wrist and hand that has caused me much pain. I apply DMSO twice a day this way and got pain relief that has make it possible for me to do my normal activities that I could not do before. The maximum pain relief came after 4 days of treatment. Some people may think DMSO is like a placebo, the pain relief is only in the mind. For myself I have proved this to not be the case. When I have forgotten to use DMSO in the morning or evening the pain surprisingly comes back and then I remember I didn't use DMSO. This product is so cheap that for $10 to $15 I can treat my pain for a year. I now use it any time I have a pain and it seems to work. I know this is hard to believe. Side effects: There might be a slight burning sensation when I apply it. On a scale of 1 to 10 it is a 1 or less. I have noticed a slight drying of the skin sometimes in the area of application. Again something I wouldn't even notice if I wasn't applying it twice a day. I have a few times noticed a garlic taste, but this rare for me. I have been using this product as described for over 6 months and recommend it to others. What I can't understand is why so many people comment positively on DMSO here on WebMD. No one has anything to gain from promoting this product. No one can make much money on this since it is only an industrial solvent. I have read many unbelievable stories about this and watched the 60 Minutes segment on YouTube. This is for real. Since no one can make any money on this, there is not money to do controlled clinical trials. If you look at the studies that have been done the dosage is all over the map so no one knows what the right concentration / dose / or how many times a day DMSO should be applied. My doctor said if it helps, use it. Read More Read Less

I am 66 years old, diagnosed with SLE, Lupus, a connective tissue disorder many years ago. When almost on my deathbed, at age 45, from Lupus, I have remained in 'remission'21 years asymptomatic. I have learned that people, like myself, who have Rh Negative blood, have more copper than iron in their blood, so I have added a small amount of copper a few times a week. I have done best with: adding DHEA 25 mg daily (over 20 years now) IV Chelation and IV DMSO has done wonders for 21 years...12 each annually. I continue with a positive ANA and asymptomatic with no Rx. I go out of the country for the IV Chleation and IV DMSO as they know the correct minerals etc. to use in the IV.I also get a lot of direct sunshine.Read More Read Less

My urologist opted to treat my bladder with DMSO treatments (for 6 weeks duration) as I live with a suprapubic catheter and have been prone to continual UTI's. The continual use of antibiotics has been very hard on my kidneys and actually caused renal failure on two occasions as my kidneys are extremely sensitive to drug use of any description. Initially I found it burnt as it entered the bladder but after the first couple of treatments, the bladder cleared up and it kept me away from using antibiotics. So I would recommend this treatment to anyone who is in a similar situation as I am as it does work and that does not appear to have any adverse affects to me or the bladder or most importantly my kidneys. I just wish it could be dispensed by the pharmacy for use at home rather than having to go to the hospital every week for approximately 10 minutes. If anyon knows if DMSO can be purchased or obtained - I'd be most appreciative of any information about this.Read More Read Less
