Works, as a powder (of the root), for external application to scrapes and other broad shallow wounds such as a shotgun wound.

HVe used golden seal topically for ringworm and other skinn problems, both on myself and cats and dogs. Works very well.

Granted, I am taking a tincture of Goldenseal and Echinacea, I have tried it to combat BV (bacterial vaginosis). Very surprised. It has made a great change. I believe this product/herb truely does fight bacteria.

For bronchitis I took one GS twice a day for two days. My ulcerative colitis proctitis began to flare with cramping and bright red blood via rectum. I have been to the bathroom about 10 times in 4 hours. If you have UC you may want to avoid this supplement. This has happened on two separate occasions and I will not take it internally again. I took it to avoid antibiotics. I was also taking OTC Tylenol, Benedryl, and Sudafed as well as rx inhalers Albuterol and Asthmanex. I am sorry I took it because a flaring colon is not worth any relief I might have obtained. I have been in bed for over 4 hours due to my exhaustion of diarrhea/cramps/bleeding, etc. I also use a salt inhaler and take Mucinex DM. Time to try something else. Read More Read Less

was informed by an employee of a health food store, good for fevers. So, I did use it in water/juice about 20 droplets into a 8 oz cup, about 3 times a day...was effective.

I take a combo Goldenseal/Fenugreek to get rid of a cold that just hangs on. Top symptoms are nasal congestion and cough. This was suggested to me by a herbologist and seems to work well. I take about 9 pills a day for a few weeks.

I had a bad case of the flu, followed by a cold that just would not go away. 7 days of taking golden seal, with vitamin c and a good multi-vitamin and the problem was gone.

I have found goldenseal to be much more effective than drugs I have been prescribed for chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. Like echinacea, it should NOT be used for more than 2 weeks. I notice one critical SIDE EFFECT is not listed here - it can cause contractions of the womb, so DEFINITELY should not be used during pregnancy. It is only available by prescription in Europe.

Golden Seal should NOT be taken on a daily basis. Goldenseal is one of those things that should be used only when needed.Topically Goldenseal will kill infection and will act as a drawing agent. I have not taken antibiotics for over 25 years. Instead I take Goldenseal with Echanesia when antibiotics would be indicated, using 3 to 4 times a day for 5 to 7 days as one would antibiotics. ANY infection I have had, viral or bacterial, how do I know or care... Goldenseal works for me.
