Why are men so cavalier about their health?

Steven Lamm, MD
I think it's probably one of the great mysteries. I think men clearly are in some ways, because of their behavior, or lack of behavior, an endangered species. Men, whether or not it's some kind of resistance to acknowledgement of illness or weakness or some macho aspect or something even more fundamental basic to their DNA are essentially dying of diseases that they need not be dying of because of their lack of proactivity. When we have young men who are not caring for themselves, who are not concerned about the consequences of their behavior, and as a result, are having progression of organ damage, frailty, illness and death prematurely and they are dying certainly before their partners, which is not good for their partners either.
