Chemical engineering student Mishele Kieffer is making medical history.
I just had my third vaccination today and it's been six months.
She's testing what could be the first vaccine ever to prevent the sexually transmitted disease herpes.
The people we want in this study are people who've never had either herpes type one or type two. Type one is the virus that usually causes oral herpes, what people might think of as fever blisters, whereas type two is more typically associated with the genital herpes.
Lead vaccine investigator Thomas Heineman says the herpes virus is debilitating and extremely painful. In adults, it's not life-threatening. But in rare cases, when it spreads from an infected mother to her baby, it can be deadly.
It's almost always a life threatening illness, often fatal, and even in the children who survive often leads to long standing neurological problems.
The vaccine is made from a particular protein in the herpes virus that's already been shown to provoke an immune response.
Earlier studies have shown that this vaccine is likely to be effective in women, but less likely to be effective in men for reasons that are not entirely clear.
So in over 40 test sites, over 75-hundred female participants will receive either the herpes vaccine or another vaccine.
I'm hoping I get that herpes vaccine. I feel, uhm, pretty special to be pioneering a new vaccine.
A new vaccine that could potentially wipe out one of the most common infectious diseases in the country. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
