There are several types of breast cancer surgeries, each one removing a different amount of tissue. A specific type of surgery may be necessary because of the size or type of breast cancer that is found, but common types are lumpectomy, total mastectomy, radical mastectomy, and partial mastectomy, as well as other types. Often after surgery, radiation is used to be sure all cancer cells are gone. After a mastectomy, some choose to undergo a surgery called breast reconstruction, which replaces skin, breast tissue, and the nipple.
