What is Nurtec ODT used for?

Nurtec ODT (rimegepant) is commonly used for the following conditions.

  • Treatment of migraine with or without aura. An aura may occur before or during a migraine attack, and can include sensory problems like seeing flashing lights or zigzag lines, having trouble speaking, or experiencing a tingling sensation. 
  • Prevention of episodic migraine, which is when migraine attacks happen between 1 and 14 times per month.

How does Nurtec ODT work (mechanism of action)?

Nurtec ODT works by blocking a substance in the brain called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which is involved in headache pain and can make headaches last longer. By blocking CGRP, Nurtec ODT  helps prevent or treat migraine.

How is Nurtec ODT supplied (dosage forms)?

Nurtec ODT is available in a 75 mg orally disintegrating tablet (ODT) that dissolves in the mouth or under the tongue.

How should I store Nurtec ODT?

Nurtec ODT should be stored in the blister pack it comes in, at room temperature, between 68 F to 77 F (20 C to 25 C). It can be exposed to temperatures between 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) for shorter periods of time, such as when transporting it. Store in a cool, dry place. 

Side Effects

What are the most common side effects of Nurtec ODT?

The most common side effects of Nurtec ODT are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.

  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain (when used to prevent episodic migraine)
  • Indigestion (when used to prevent episodic migraine)

What are the serious side effects of Nurtec ODT?

While less common, the most serious side effects of Nurtec ODT are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Nurtec ODT may cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Allergic reactions may occur any time after you take Nurtec ODT, and may even occur several days after you take the medicine. Stop taking Nurtec ODT and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.

  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Racing heart
  • Fever or general ill feeling
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
  • Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
  • Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Joint pain

Warnings & Precautions

Who should not use Nurtec ODT?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not take Nurtec ODT.

  • Rimegepant
  • Nurtec ODT
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

Your pharmacist can tell you all of the ingredients in Nurtec ODT.

Liver Problems. Nurtec ODT should not be used if your liver is not working as well as it should be. If there is a concern about the health of your liver, your healthcare provider may do tests to determine if it is working well enough to take this medicine.

What should I know about Nurtec ODT before using it?

Do not take Nurtec ODT unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Take it as prescribed.

Do not share Nurtec ODT with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.

Keep Nurtec ODT out of the reach of children.

Open the blister pack with dry hands by peeling back the foil covering. Do not open it until you are ready to take the medicine. Take the medicine right away after you open the blister pack. Do not store the medicine outside of the blister pack for future use.

Nurtec ODT will dissolve in your mouth. Place the tablet either on the tongue or under the tongue. You do not need to drink anything with it. 

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Nurtec ODT?

Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Nurtec ODT is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

Current and Past Health Conditions. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of the following.

  • Kidney problems
  • Liver problems

Other Medicines and Supplements. Nurtec ODT may interact with other medicines and supplements. Before using Nurtec ODT, tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. See the Interactions section for more details.

Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Nurtec ODT could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Nurtec ODT, you can register for the Migraine Observational NURTEC Pregnancy Registry (MONITOR) by calling 877-366-0324 or at www.nurtecpregnancyregistry.com. This registry collects safety information about the use of Nurtec ODT during pregnancy.

Breastfeeding. Very small amounts of Nurtec ODT pass into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should take Nurtec ODT while breastfeeding.

Interactions

Does Nurtec ODT interact with foods or drinks?

Nurtec ODT interacts with grapefruit. While taking Nurtec ODT, do not eat or drink any grapefruit products, including grapefruit, grapefruit juice, or any juices that contain grapefruit. 

There are no known interactions between Nurtec ODT and alcohol. However, alcohol can trigger migraine attacks in some people. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and medical advice. 

Does Nurtec ODT interact with other medicines (drug interactions)?

Always tell your healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using.

In particular, make sure that you discuss if you are using any of the following before taking Nurtec ODT.

  • Fluconazole (Diflucan) or itraconazole (Sporanox, Tolsura), which is a medicine used for fungal infections
  • Cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune, and others), which is a medicine to suppress your immune system
  • Rifampin, which is a medicine commonly used to treat an infection called tuberculosis
  • Amiodarone (Pacerone and others) or quinidine, which is a medicine used for irregular heart rhythm
  • Lapatinib (Tykerb), which is a medicine used to treat certain types of breast cancer
  • Ranolazine (Aspruzyo Sprinkle), which is a medicine used for chest pain

Many other medicines may alter the blood levels of Nurtec ODT. Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take or have recently taken.

Overdose/Missed Dose

What should I do if I accidentally use too much Nurtec ODT?

If you or someone else has used too much Nurtec ODT, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Nurtec ODT?

If you take Nurtec ODT to prevent migraine and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and only take the next dose. Do not take double or extra doses. 

If you take Nurtec ODT to treat migraine, the medicine is meant to be used only when needed. Use it as your healthcare provider recommends. Do not take double or extra doses.
