Can men get osteoporosis?

Ethel Siris, MD
Men most certainly can get osteoporosis and do. It's less common in men than women, but as men grow to be older and older, and as more men are living to be older and older, more of them are at risk. Right now, the guidelines for when to test and when to treat men are looser than those in women. We're not as clear as to what we'd want to do. But I'm happy to say that there is a lot of research going on, on male osteoporosis, and the new National Osteoporosis Foundation guideline, which will be coming out at the end of '07 or early in '08 will for the first time have some guidance about what to do in men, in older men.
