I often joke with parents that daycare breeds immunity. It builds character. In order to understand how to prevent infections in a daycare, you have to understand how germs are transmitted. There are two major ways.

One is through respiratory droplets. The other is something that is a little unpleasant to think about, but happens all the time. It's called the fecal oral route. They may have a dirty diaper and they may also touch the germs that were under there.

The best thing that people can do to prevent the spread of respiratory droplets, isolate the child who is coughing. The best way to prevent the fecal oral route of transmission is careful hand hygiene.

The daycare workers should be washing their hands often, especially after they change a diaper.
