New York, NY, September 19, 2018: Medscape, the leading source of clinical news, health information, and point-of-care tools for physicians, today announced the results of Medscape Physicians’ Choice: Top Hospitals for Serious Conditions and Procedures (non-cancer) and Medscape Physicians’ Choice: Top Hospitals for Cancer Treatment.
A national survey of more than 11,000 physicians asked respondents to rank their preferences for care and treatment for themselves or family for a complex or difficult disease or condition, such as multiple sclerosis or cardiac surgery, and five types of cancer, assuming no barriers, such as transportation or cost. This is the second year of the report.

The Medscape survey offers patients and the public valuable information on the expert view of top hospitals, and insight into the criteria physicians use when assessing the best place for care. For each condition, the survey listed hospitals as chosen by all physician respondents, and a separate list as chosen by relevant specialists in that clinical area.
“Physicians speak with other physicians and healthcare professionals. They go to conferences and read medical journals, and are likely to have more knowledge about standout hospitals or which hospitals are getting excellent results, doing groundbreaking research, or getting a sense of where they themselves would go for medical care,” said Leslie Kane, MA, Senior Director, Medscape Business of Medicine.
Medscape Physicians’ Choice: Top Hospitals for Serious Conditions and Procedures included cardiac conditions, interventional cardiac surgery, stroke, hip replacement, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, advanced hepatitis C, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, infectious diseases and pediatric conditions. Medscape Physicians’ Choice: Top Hospitals for Cancer Treatment included breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and renal cell carcinoma.
The Mayo Clinic was ranked highest in six out of the 10 conditions. For cancer treatment, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center took the top ranking in all five cancer types. Overall, physicians named 33 hospitals.
Professional Reputation, Physician Expertise Deemed Most Important
An institution’s professional reputation and the expertise of its physicians were deemed most important by a combined 62% of physicians, followed by a specific physician at the hospital (12%), leading technology available (10%), and low error rate (6%). Other criteria, ranking lower (from 1% to 4%), were published studies, low infection rates, participation in clinical trials and readmission rates.
