Some claim that apple cider vinegar is an excellent way to manage lupus symptoms. Apple cider vinegar is twice-fermented apple juice. It consists of crushed apples, yeast, and sugar. After a few weeks, the yeast and natural bacteria turn the sugar into alcohol. Then, during a second fermentation, the alcohol is turned into acetic acid, creating apple cider vinegar.

You can find raw or pasteurized apple cider vinegar in most stores. People prefer raw apple cider vinegar for health reasons because it might contain more natural bacteria and yeasts than pasteurized. The benefits of apple cider vinegar aren’t found on the nutrition label, as there aren’t high amounts of vitamins, minerals, or calories in it. Instead, the vinegar contains:

  • Natural probiotics, which are good for your immune system and gut health.
  • Antioxidants, which can prevent damage to your cells.

The reason people use apple cider vinegar for lupus symptoms is that it stimulates hydrochloric acid production in your body. Lupus can cause a decrease in your body’s overall hydrochloric acid content. Apple cider vinegar then helps create a balance in your body and has detoxifying benefits, making it a good home remedy.

Apple cider vinegar is also good for building up good bacteria in your gut and helping your body absorb nutrients better. People consider this excellent for lupus as it can help reduce side effects. It would be best to find organic apple cider vinegar that still contains the “mother” apple. This is a cloudy substance that is believed to have the most nutrients and good bacteria—taking a tablespoon three times a day before eating is recommended.

Overall, apple cider vinegar is a safe and possibly effective method for boosting your gut health. However, it’s not the ultimate cure for your lupus. Apple cider vinegar won’t take away all your symptoms and side effects. There are some things you should watch out for before downing apple cider vinegar every day. These include:

  • Teeth erosion from the acid in apple cider vinegar
  • Increased acid reflux from the acidic vinegar
  • Inability to process the excess acid through your kidneys if you have chronic kidney disease

Talk to your doctor if you're interested in adding apple cider vinegar to your lupus management regime. They'll be able to help you decide if this is a good idea or not. Especially if they've been monitoring the effect of lupus on your organs, like your kidneys, don't give up all your other treatment plans and only drink apple cider vinegar.
