: Do I need any tests before taking supplements?

Steven Lamm, MD
There are standards of care for every decade in a person's life, and so certainly if I were in my twenties, I would want to at least have gone to the doctor, I would want to know what my blood pressure was, what my cholesterol was, what my blood sugar was, I'd want to make sure my immunizations where up to date, my meningococcal vaccine, right? If I were female, I'd be starting to think in terms of an HPV vaccine. We didn't even talk about sexually transmitted diseases…very, very important area. Every decade has their own issues.

When you're in your twenties as I said, get some baseline studies. When you're in your thirties, there are some other things that are going to be starting, for women, whether it's mammograms, in men as they get a little bit older, it's for their prostate, and now we have the new technology that really can evaluate early atherosclerosis, early heart disease, very, very exciting. But I don't think you necessarily have to go to the doctor before you start on Co Q 10 or before you start taking B vitamin. I mean that could certainly be done before then, or omega 3, or calcium and vitamin D. Do I think that any of these supplements in and of themselves will cure you of any condition? Probably not, but they should be part of the armamentarium, part of the attack of disease and wellness.
