- Arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis). Researchers accidentally discovered that New Zealand green-lipped mussel might be helpful for arthritis. During a study intended to test the effectiveness of green-lipped mussel for cancer treatment, patients in the study reported that they had less joint pain and stiffness. This triggered research about possible benefits of green-lipped mussel in arthritis treatment. But study results so far have been mixed. According to some research, certain extracts might reduce symptoms of arthritis including pain and stiffness, but other studies show no benefit. Most studies have used a specific extract of New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Seatone, MacFarland Laboratories).
- Asthma. Developing research suggests that a particular extract of New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Lyprinol, Pharmalink) can decrease daytime wheezing and improve breathing in some asthma patients.
- Other conditions.

New Zealand green-lipped mussel might be safe for most people. It can cause some side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and intestinal gas. In rare cases, it might cause liver problems.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: New Zealand green-lipped mussel might be UNSAFE to use during pregnancy.
