May 8, 2020 - Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary, Kate Miller, tested positive for coronavirus, President Donald Trump confirmed Friday afternoon. Miller also confirmed the result to NBC News on Friday afternoon and said she asymptomatic.

Reporters learned Friday morning that one of Pence’s staff members tested negative for the virus on Thursday but positive on Friday morning, and Trump confirmed the news in the afternoon during a meeting at the White House with Republican members of Congress.

“She tested very good for a long period of time, and then all of a sudden today, she tested positive,” Trump said. Miller is married to Stephen Miller, Trump’s senior adviser and speechwriter.

“She hasn’t come into contact with me,” Trump said. “She’s spent some time with the vice president.”

Since Miller handled communications for the White House coronavirus task force, she was also in contact with reporters, and the White House is now making tests available to journalists, according to CNN. During a White House press briefing with Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany an hour before Trump’s meeting with Republicans, reporters wore face masks.

“We’ve put in place the guidelines that our experts have put forward to keep this building safe,” McEnany said during the briefing.

“We clean the facility. We social distance. We keep people six feet away from one another,” she said.

The initial announcement occurred Friday morning after an hour-long delay of Pence’s flight to Des Moines, Iowa. Miller wasn’t on the plane, reporters on Air Force Two were told, but she may have been in contact with six people who were scheduled to fly on the trip. They left the plane before takeoff, CNN reported, and Pence tested negative Friday morning.

In Des Moines, Pence met with faith leaders to talk about responsible gatherings and then attended a roundtable about food supply.

Trump, Pence and other senior White House staff are now tested daily after one of Trump’s personal valets tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

The White House continues to “ensure every precaution is taken to keep the President, First Family and the entire White House Complex safe and healthy at all times,” White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement on Friday.

“In addition to social distancing, daily temperature checks and symptom histories, hand sanitizer, and regular deep cleaning of all workspaces, every staff member in close proximity to the president and vice president is being tested daily for COVID-19 as well as any guests,” he said.
