A Mediterranean diet may be good for people with diabetes, since it really focuses on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, like nuts and seeds. It may also benefit people with high cholesterol or heart disease, and it's also been shown to help prevent certain types of cancer.

When you have diabetes and you're dining out at a restaurant, it's really important to watch how much you eat in your portion size. Restaurants are known for having very large portion sizes of food, so try taking half home, split a meal or an entree with someone that you're dining with.

It's a very common nutrition myth that people who have diabetes need to avoid carbohydrates all together. That's really not true. They do have to be mindful, however, in how much they eat, but carbohydrates really is a very important nutrient for our bodies.
