Nov. 24, 2021 -- Actor Steve Burton said Tuesday that he was fired from ABC’s iconic soap opera General Hospital after refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19, according to NBC News.

Burton played the character Jason Morgan in more than 2,200 episodes during the past 30 years. Rumors had surfaced in recent weeks that he had been terminated due to vaccine refusal.

“I wanted you to hear it from me personally,” Burton said in an Instagram video.

“Unfortunately, General Hospital has let me go because of the vaccine mandate. I did apply for my medical and religious exemptions, and both of those were denied, which, you know, hurts,” he said. “But this is also about personal freedom to me. I don’t think anybody should lose their livelihood over this.”

Burton, 51, thanked his fans and his colleagues. He also mentioned the possibility of returning to the show in the future and said it was important to remain positive.

“Maybe one day, if these mandates are lifted, I can return and finish my career as Jason Morgan. That would be an honor,” he said. “And if not, I’m going to take this amazing experience, move forward, and be forever grateful.”

Burton’s last shoot for the show was Oct. 27, according to NBC News, which confirmed Tuesday that he was let go from the cast for failing to adhere to the show’s vaccine requirement.

The vaccine mandate for Zone A at General Hospital, which includes the actors and those on set when the actors don’t wear masks, went into effect on Nov. 1, according to Variety. On Monday, the news outlet reported that it seemed like Burton may have been fired from the show due to the requirement.

Another actor, Ingo Rademacher, was vocal about his refusal to comply with the show’s vaccine mandate, Variety reported. He was fired earlier this month, and his final episode aired on Monday.
