Eating Fruit High in Vitamin C May Help Children With Asthma

continued...

Jonathan Spergel, MD, who also reviewed the study for WebMD, agrees that the findings are "far from conclusive. Maybe there's something there, but I need a lot more evidence before I put every patient on vitamin C." Spergel is medical director of the Asthma Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Until further studies are done, Ruff recommends that children with asthma continue their current treatment plans. "I think vitamin C is good for kids; I think fruit is good for kids," he says. "But I'm not sure it's going to put me out of business."

Vital Information:

  • According to a recent study, children who consume fruit high in vitamin C experience fewer symptoms of asthma.
  • Researchers found that children had less wheezing even when they ate fresh fruit only once or twice a week.
  • Experts caution parents that many factors contribute to asthma, and the significance of vitamin C is difficult to establish.
